Season Rewind | A Confident Away Performance in Kent

15 February 2024

This Saturday afternoon, we welcome Gillingham to Rodney Parade as we look to bounce back from Tuesday’s defeat against Notts County. To get fans in the mood for Saturday’s crucial encounter, we are hitting the rewind button and revisiting our 2-0 win away at Gillingham earlier this campaign.

Ahead of our visit to Priestfield, we had suffered a difficult 3-0 loss to Notts County at Meadow Lane and were in need of a confidence boost.

The hosts got off to a strong start as they looked to recapture some of their own early-season form. Nick Townsend was on hand to early efforts from Dom Jeffries and Macauley Bonne, while Omar Bogle came close to opening the scoring, only to be denied at close range by Jake Turner.

Bogle would get the better of the keeper in the 18th minute. The striker punished a poor back pass from Cheye Alexander, rounded Turner, and was brought down by the keeper, resulting in a penalty.

Bogle stepped up, calm as you like, and smashed the ball into the bottom left-hand corner to reward the 179 travelling Exiles for their efforts and give us the lead.

The Gillingham defence would implode again just six minutes later. Aaron Wildig played a delightful ball into Matty Bondswell in the box. The defender was clumsily brought down, resulting in the referee again pointing to the spot.

Fans turned their eyes to Omar Bogle once again, but the result was never in doubt, with the striker completing his brace by sending Turner the wrong way.

The Gills attempted to mount a comeback in the second half, with Jonny Williams and Dom Jeffries both threatening. However, their attempts were thwarted by Nick Townsed, with the keeper in fine form.
